Suunto is delivering a significant enhancement to its smartwatch lineup with the release of software update version 2.43.8. This comprehensive update is rolling out to Suunto Race, Race S, and Vertical models, bringing a host of new features and optimizations designed to enrich the user experience for athletes and outdoor enthusiasts alike. From refined sports tracking to improved navigation and data analysis, this update demonstrates Suunto’s commitment to continuous innovation.

Enhanced Sports Tracking and Data Metrics

A standout feature of this update is the introduction of an outdoor track running mode. This specialized mode now includes lane selection for 400m tracks and the flexibility to define custom track lengths ranging from 200m to 400m. This precision-focused addition will be particularly beneficial for runners who frequently train on tracks, allowing for more accurate distance and pace tracking.

Beyond track running, Suunto has vastly expanded the available data fields for sport mode customization. Users can now access a wider array of metrics to tailor their display during workouts, providing real-time insights into various aspects of their performance. The newly added data fields include:

  • ZoneSense duration in aerobic, anaerobic, and VO2Max zones
  • Previous lap duration, average pace, average HR, and average power
  • Current activity average pace (in multisport) and average power (in multisport)
  • Lap ascent duration and descent duration
  • Overall descent duration, ascent duration, moving time, total time, rest time, and pause time
  • Swim rest time
  • Average rowing pace
  • Forecasted temperature and forecasted wind
  • Compass heading
  • Current HR zone, power zone, and pace zone
  • Battery hours and battery percentage
  • GPS signal strength

These additions provide an unprecedented level of detail and customization, empowering users to monitor the metrics most crucial to their training and performance goals.

Optimizations for Navigation and Usability

The 2.43.8 update also brings key optimizations for navigation and overall usability. GNSS optimization now occurs automatically over the wireless network every night, ensuring that the watch’s satellite positioning system remains current and accurate without requiring manual intervention. This passive update improves GPS performance and reliability for outdoor activities.

Furthermore, Suunto has introduced new winter map styles, enhancing the visual clarity and utility of maps during cold-weather pursuits. These specialized map renditions are designed to improve readability and detail in snowy or icy environments, making navigation more intuitive for skiers, snowboarders, and winter hikers.

Seamless Update Process

Suunto has streamlined the software update process to ensure a hassle-free experience for users. When an update is available and your Suunto smartwatch is connected to the Suunto app, the new software will be automatically downloaded to the watch.

Once the software is successfully downloaded, your watch will update itself overnight, provided the battery level is at least 20%. For users who prefer to install the update immediately, a manual option is available. Navigate to Settings > General on your watch and select Software update to initiate the installation process. This user-friendly approach ensures that all Suunto Race, Race S, and Vertical owners can easily benefit from the latest features and improvements.
