A recently surfaced report has shed new light on the future trajectory of Samsung’s popular Galaxy Watch lineup. Intriguingly, the information suggests a potential departure from previous release patterns, indicating that a direct successor to the well-regarded Galaxy Watch6 Classic may not be on the horizon in the immediate future.
No Galaxy Watch8 Classic on the Horizon?
According to insights purportedly obtained by Techmaniacs, Samsung’s plans for its smartwatch division later this year point towards a different strategic direction. This development contrasts with earlier indications that Samsung was actively developing two distinct sizes of the standard Galaxy Watch8, complete with both Wi-Fi and LTE enabled versions. Evidence for these models surfaced through the appearance of test firmware associated with model numbers SM-L320, SM-L325, SM-L330, and SM-L335.
A Mysterious Third Smartwatch Option Emerges
Adding another layer of intrigue, the same initial leak also highlighted the existence of devices bearing model numbers SM-L500 and SM-L505U. These model numbers, also featuring distinct Wi-Fi and LTE variants, did not align with the root model numbers of either the existing Galaxy Watch Ultra or the Galaxy Watch6 Classic, leaving the identity of this third smartwatch option shrouded in mystery.
Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 Takes Center Stage
However, Techmaniacs now posits that this enigmatic third flagship smartwatch slated for release this year is, in fact, the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2, rather than a Galaxy Watch8 Classic. The report further suggests that the upcoming ‘Ultra’ smartwatch will maintain the design language of the current Galaxy Watch Ultra. The primary upgrade for the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 is anticipated to be an enhancement in memory capacity, although the specifics – whether this pertains to storage, RAM, or both – remain unconfirmed.
Pricing and Availability Expectations
Furthermore, the website indicates that the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2 will likely debut at the same €699 launch price as its predecessor. It remains to be seen whether this pricing strategy will translate to a $649.99 price point in the United States. Interestingly, Techmaniacs also suggests that the current Galaxy Watch Ultra will receive a permanent price reduction to approximately €400, which, based on current exchange rates, would equate to around $450. The Galaxy Watch8 series, alongside the Galaxy Watch Ultra 2, is widely expected to be unveiled this summer, potentially coinciding with the launch of Samsung’s next-generation foldable smartphones, the Galaxy Z Fold7 and Galaxy Z Flip7.
