Huawei appears to be on the verge of introducing groundbreaking features to its upcoming wearable collection. A significant addition could be a Power Meter, a feature possibly exclusive to the highly anticipated Watch GT 6 Pro. If this comes to fruition, it could be the first smartwatch in the world with the ability to measure a person’s power output.
The information comes from recent leaks by WinFuture, which shared renders and specifications for the Watch GT 6 series. While the images showcased the new smartwatches in great detail, the mention of a new Power Meter on the Pro model was what truly stood out.
Understanding Functional Threshold Power (FTP)

WinFuture’s report specifies that the new function is called Functional Threshold Power (FTP). For cyclists, this feature acts as a built-in power meter, measuring their power output in watts. To get even more precise data, users will have the option to connect the smartwatch to an external power meter.
This technology works by detecting the stress and flexion within a bicycle’s parts. It uses strain gauges and small sensors to measure the torque generated and the force applied with each pedal stroke. This data is then used to calculate the rider’s output in watts by combining the measured force with their pedaling speed.
Enhancing Athletic Performance and Training
The data provided by the power meter offers real-time insights into training intensity. This information is invaluable for athletes and fitness enthusiasts who want to track their performance, manage their pace, and create more effective training schedules.
The new feature is expected to be integrated into the watch’s Active Rings section, a feature previously teased by Huawei. While these details offer a glimpse into the Watch GT 6 Pro’s capabilities, we can expect more information during the official launch event on September 19.
