Amazfit Teases New Rugged Smartwatch with Solar Charging: T-Rex Solar?

A new player might soon enter the world of solar-powered sports watches. Amazfit, a company known for making affordable smartwatches, just dropped a big hint that they are working on a brand-new device. If the rumors are true, this new watch could take on heavy hitters like the Garmin Fenix 8 Solar.

A Surprise Picture on Instagram

The rumors started when eagle-eyed tech fans spotted an unusual photo on Amazfit Spain’s official Instagram page. The image shows someone wearing a watch that Amazfit does not currently sell.

Even though the picture is a bit blurry, it reveals some very interesting design choices. Most Amazfit watches only have four buttons, but this mystery device has six. It also features a thick, rugged metal border around the screen, making it look much tougher than the company’s usual lifestyle watches.

The Clues Hidden in the Screen

The biggest takeaway from the photo is the screen itself. Instead of using a bright, glowing AMOLED screen like a modern smartphone, this watch appears to use a “Memory-in-Pixel” (MiP) display.

These screens look a bit like digital paper. They don’t use much battery power, they are incredibly easy to read under direct sunlight, and they usually look a bit matte instead of glossy. The watch in the photo shows a simple black-and-white face, which is very common for MiP screens because they cannot display super-bright, vibrant colors.

Code Leaks Support the Rumor

This Instagram post isn’t the only piece of evidence we have. Not too long ago, developers looked inside the code of the Zepp Health smartphone app—the official app used to control Amazfit watches. Deep inside that code, they found multiple mentions of a new smartwatch that features built-in solar panels.

When you combine the solar app code with a low-power MiP screen, it makes perfect sense. These two technologies are almost always paired together to create watches with batteries that can last for weeks, or even months, just by using daylight.

A Quick Reason to Stay Cautious

Before getting too excited, there is a chance this could all be a mistake. Tech experts noticed a few weird details in the photo. For starters, the person modeling the watch is actually wearing it upside down. Because of this, it is highly possible that Amazfit’s social media team used an AI image generator to create the picture, which might explain why the watch looks so different from anything else they sell.

However, because the code leaks exist, we know Amazfit is definitely building something behind the scenes. We will have to wait for an official announcement to see exactly what they have up their sleeve.
