Google is gearing up to unveil its latest smartwatch, likely alongside the highly anticipated Pixel 10 smartphone series. While previous rumors suggested a significant battery upgrade for the upcoming Watch 4, it appears the device will maintain the same system-on-a-chip (SoC) found in its two predecessors.

The Google Pixel Watch 3, though a modest improvement over the original in performance, notably featured the identical Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 SoC as the 2nd generation model. It now seems the forthcoming Pixel Watch 4 will follow suit, sticking with the familiar chip.

Consistency in Performance

According to an internal source cited by Android Authority, the Pixel Watch 4 will not receive an SoC upgrade. The decision to retain the Snapdragon W5 Gen 1 for the third consecutive generation likely stems from the unavailability of Qualcomm’s next-generation wearable SoC.

The Future of Wearable Processors

Qualcomm is reportedly making good progress on its next-gen wearable SoC, codenamed “aspen.” Unlike previous iterations, this new chip is rumored to be an entirely fresh design, not based on any of Qualcomm’s existing silicon. This could mean a substantial leap in performance for future smartwatches that incorporate it, thanks to a potentially powerful core configuration.

Battery Life: A Notable Improvement

Despite the consistent SoC, the Pixel Watch 4 is expected to deliver a welcome improvement in battery life. Earlier reports indicate that the 41mm model will feature a 327 mAh battery, a bump up from the 307 mAh battery in the 41mm Pixel Watch 3. The larger 45mm model is rumored to pack a 459 mAh battery, matching the capacity of its predecessor. This focus on battery enhancement suggests Google is prioritizing endurance for its next wearable.
