Google is rolling out a brand new update called Health Guardian. If you wear a Pixel Watch, you are in luck. Google decided to give these new health tracking tools completely for free.
However, users of another popular device—the Fitbit Air—might feel a little left out. They will have to pay for a subscription to get some of the same features.
What Is Health Guardian?
The new Health Guardian system is built right into the Google Health app. It brings useful health tracking features to your wrist. If you own a Pixel Watch 3, Pixel Watch 4, or Pixel Watch 5, you can start setting up these features right now.
The update includes three main tools:
-
Blood Pressure Trends
-
Insulin Resistance Trends
-
Sleep Breathing Quality
How the Health Reports Work
These tools do not give you instant, real-time numbers every second of the day. Instead, they look at your body over a longer period to show helpful patterns.
To get your first report, the watch needs a few days of consistent data:
-
Blood Pressure Trends needs at least five days of data in a single week.
-
Insulin Resistance Trends needs at least seven days of data.
Once the app collects enough information, it sends out a proper report at the beginning of each month.
The Catch with the Fitbit Air
While Pixel Watch owners get everything for free, the story is different for the Fitbit Air.
Google announced that Fitbit Air users will also get Blood Pressure Trends and Insulin Resistance Trends later this year. But there is a catch: you will need a paid Google Health Premium subscription to use them.
Google Health Premium costs $9.99 every month, or $99 for a full year. If you buy a Fitbit Air, you do get a free three-month trial. Also, people who already pay for Google AI Pro or Ultra plans get Health Premium included. Even with those perks, many fans are surprised to see Google treating its Pixel Watch users better than its Fitbit users.
