Amazfit Helio Strap Can Now Receive Phone Alerts Thanks to a Third-Party App

The Amazfit Helio Strap is a popular screen-free fitness band built mostly for deep health tracking, sleep analysis, and continuous heart rate monitoring. Because it does not have a display screen, the official software keeps things minimal. It never bothers you with text messages, app pings, or phone calls.

However, tech hobbyists have found a clever way around this limitation. Thanks to an unofficial Android alternative app called OpenStrap, users can now force the fitness band to vibrate for incoming calls and smartphone notifications.

How the Unofficial OpenStrap App Works

Out of the box, the Helio Strap includes a built-in vibration motor, but Zepp Health uses it sparingly. The official app only triggers the motor for basic tasks like pairing alerts or warning you about a low battery.

An unofficial Android application changes that behavior. The OpenStrap app acts as a replacement companion tool. Once connected, it overrides the default software limitations and allows users to set custom vibration patterns for phone calls and general notifications.

The Setup Process and Catch

While this new trick is exciting for users who want a bit more feedback from their screen-free tracker, getting it to work requires a few extra steps:

  • The Official App is Still Needed: You cannot completely delete the official Zepp app right away. The very first device pairing requires the official app and a registered account to grab the strap’s hidden security authentication key.

  • Android Only: The workaround is currently restricted to Android devices (version 9 or newer), leaving iOS users out.

  • Data and Tracking: OpenStrap also handles standard sync features like sleep, heart rate, HRV, SpO2, stress, and workouts, letting users export data or connect with Android Health Connect.

Why Did Amazfit Leave This Out?

Many users wonder why Zepp Health did not include phone notifications in the official software from the start. The most likely reason comes down to battery life.

The Helio Strap packs a small 232 mAh battery. This tiny cell delivers up to 10 days of solid, uninterrupted fitness tracking, which is one of the device’s greatest selling points. Constantly firing the vibration motor throughout the day for every single phone notification and message would drain that battery much faster.

Even with those battery trade-offs, this third-party breakthrough proves that the hardware is fully capable. For fitness fans who do not mind a shorter battery life in exchange for feeling a buzz on their wrist when a call comes in, this unofficial app opens up a brand-new way to use the wearable.
